About Pilates

Pilates is comprised of more than 500 exercises that are performed either in a mat-based workout or by using special resistance equipment that was developed by Joseph Pilates.  The equipment used in Pilates emphasizes spring resistance.  Pilates training strengthens the core of the body-the deep abdominal muscles, gluteus muscles and the deep intrinsic muscles surrounding the spine.

More traditional types of training tend to develop short and bulky muscles.  This type of musculature is most prone to injury.  Pilates elongates the spine, increasing the elasticity of muscles and the flexibility of joints.  It is this balance between strength and flexibility that reduces the potential for injury.

Pilates emphasizes flowing movement that requires the use of multiple muscle groups simultaneously.  Pilates avoids emphasizing on the strength of stronger muscles while neglecting those that are already weak.  By focusing on balance between all working muscles Pilates can benefit those recovering from injury as well as anyone seeking good posture.  Controlled breathing and concentration are crucial, making Pilates a true workout for the body and the mind.
